Almaty is the former capital of Kazakhstan and its largest city situated in the southeastern part of the country at the foot of Zailiski Ala-Tau mountain. A beautiful city characterized by wide boulevards separated by flower beds, twin towers, shimmering high-rises of copper and glass, and impressive statues. Although Almaty is not the capital anymore, it is home to the Kazakhstan Academy of Sciences, numerous research institutes. It encompasses many unique museums, theaters, an opera house and Pushkin State Public Library. The green city also boasts many parks including the popular Panfilov Park, a botanical garden, a zoo and several stadiums. Among the highlights of the city is the apple monument depicting the Almaty's symbol. The beautiful yellow Voznesensky cathedral as well as the Alma-Ata city mosque are also worth a visit. The Respublika Alany is a beautiful square renown for opening gorgeous views of the mountains. To get the best view of the city take a cable-car ride up to the Kok-Tobe and see the mountains and vineyards. Almaty is also a world-renowned sports center that has high-quality ski slopes.
